Spain's quest to defend both world titles in Doha is running exactly to script. On the second day of the FIP World Cup at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex, the men's team beat Paraguay 3-0 and the women's team swept Great Britain 3-0, leaving both Spanish sides top of their groups with one round of the group stage still to play.
Men: Navarro and Lebrón dominate, Coello closes it out
After Monday's 3-0 opener against Sweden, Spain's men needed only straight sets again on Tuesday. Miguel Yanguas and Javier Leal opened the tie with a 6-4, 6-3 win over González and Dehnike, the tightest of the three rubbers. Francisco Navarro and Juan Lebrón then put on the most one-sided display of the evening, beating Petit and Popovich 6-0, 6-2.
World number one Arturo Coello, paired with Aimar Goñi Lacabe, completed the whitewash against Miranda and Rodríguez, 6-1, 6-3. It was a calmer outing for Goñi after a demanding debut against Sweden, where he and Yanguas were taken to a third set. With two wins from two in Group B, Spain have mathematically secured their quarter-final place, according to the FIP. Their final group fixture is against the United Arab Emirates, who have lost to both Paraguay and Sweden.
Women: Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría reunite
The headline of the women's tie was a reunion. Ariana Sánchez and Paula Josemaría, the former partners who spent the 2026 Premier Padel season on opposite sides of the net, teamed up again for Spain and beat Phillips and Tordoff 6-0, 6-1. There was no sign of rust.
Andrea Ustero and Martina Calvo had already set the tone with a double 6-0 over Norton and Jackson, and Marta Ortega and Beatriz González added a 6-1, 6-1 win over Gibson and Nicholas. Across six matches against Germany and Great Britain, the defending champions have conceded just five games, as Padel Addict calculated.
Argentina keep pace, Group A comes down to the wire
Spain's great rivals are matching them. Argentina's men beat the Netherlands 3-0, with Agustin Tapia making his World Cup debut alongside Valentino Libaak (6-4, 6-2), followed by wins for Franco Stupaczuk and Maximiliano Arce (6-1, 6-3) and Leandro Augsburger and Federico Chingotto (6-3, 6-4). The Argentine women beat Belgium 3-0, with Delfina Brea and Martina Fassio winning 6-0, 6-0.
In Spain's women's group, the race for second place is wide open. Germany, beaten 3-0 by Spain on day one, bounced back with a 2-1 win over Brazil, with Kurz and Blaschke (6-2, 6-2) and Hering and Plumer (6-1, 6-1) taking the decisive points. According to the FIP, seven of the eight women's quarter-final places are already filled, and only the runner-up spot behind Spain remains open.
What comes next
On Wednesday, Spain's women face Brazil, while Germany play Great Britain with a quarter-final place at stake. Elsewhere, Argentina meet France in both the men's and women's draws. The quarter-finals are scheduled for Thursday 5 November, with the tournament concluding on Saturday 7 November.
