On Thursday at Movistar Arena, Alejandra Salazar and Aranzazu Osoro defeated Lorena Rufo and Victoria Iglesias 7-6, 6-7, 6-2. The same Rufo-Iglesias pair who beat them in the women's final at the Belgrade FIP Gold barely two weeks ago. A result with the flavour of a statement. On Friday, Salazar steps back onto that court for a quarter-final against the world's No. 1 pair, Gemma Triay and Delfi Brea. Her farewell tournament in her home city has turned, quietly and stubbornly, into a genuine title bid.

A Farewell That Refuses the Script

Salazar carries into these quarter-finals 62 career titles, seven world championships and four spells as world number one — a record that has never needed this week to justify itself. Yet here she is in Madrid, winning the matches that matter. The defeat in Thursday's third set was not a scare; it was the moment she made Rufo-Iglesias feel the full weight of the crowd and closed it out 6-2.

Triay and Brea arrived at the quarter-finals without dropping a set. The head-to-head record favours the Balearic pair heavily. Yet at Movistar Arena, with Madrid's crowd generating the noise it reserves for Salazar, the expected order can dissolve quickly. The women's semi-final field will also include Paula Josemaría and Bea González against Marta Ortega and Sofía Araújo, plus Ari Sánchez with Andrea Ustero and Clara Fernández with Lucía Calvo. The women's final is scheduled for Sunday at 16:00.

The Men's Draw: Five Seeds Gone

If the women's bracket carries its emotional narrative, the men's carries its story of chaos. Of the eight seeded pairs in Thursday's round of 16, five were eliminated before Friday began.

The most significant exit: Juan Lebrón and Leo Augsburger, seeded second, fell to Gonzalo Alfonso and Tino Libaak, 7-6(5), 7-5 — a win Alfonso described as the most important of his season. Jon Sanz and Franco Stupaczuk, who had claimed the Belgrade FIP Gold just nine days earlier, were beaten by José Jiménez and Álex Arroyo, 7-6, 6-4.

Today's quarter-final line-up reflects that upheaval. Arturo Coello and Agustín Tapia, the world No. 1 pair and defending Madrid champions, face fifth-seeded Coki Nieto and Miguel Yanguas. Ale Galán and Fede Chingotto play Paquito Navarro and Martín Di Nenno. The other two quarter-finals feature no top-eight seeds at all: Flavio Abbate and Alonso Rodríguez — who became the first pair with an Italian player to reach a Premier Padel P1 quarter-final — meet Alfonso-Libaak, while Jiménez-Arroyo face Íñigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista in the other open bracket.

Abbate and Rodríguez reached this stage with back-to-back three-set recoveries: they beat seventh seeds Javi Leal and Fran Guerrero 2-6, 7-6(4), 7-6(6) in the round of 16, then defeated Solano-Pereyra 6-3, 6-4.

Paris Is Already Calling

Sunday's Madrid finals share the calendar with the qualifying rounds of the Alpine Paris Major at Roland-Garros, which runs September 6–13; the main draw starts Monday, September 7. Ranking points earned at Movistar Arena this week will directly shape the seedings in Paris, giving today's results a significance that extends beyond Spain.

The tribute ceremony for Alejandra Salazar is set for Sunday between the women's final (16:00) and the men's final (no earlier than 17:30). Whether she arrives at that moment as a finalist or as a spectator depends on what happens at centre court on Friday afternoon.

Quarter-finals: Friday, 4 September, from 09:00 CET. Live and free on Red Bull TV; also on Movistar Plus (Vamos).
