The countdown is over. Padel makes its competitive debut at a Mediterranean Games today, Saturday 22 August, as the men's first-round matches get under way in the morning at the Parco Mediterraneo Salinella in Taranto, with the women's opening round following in the afternoon. Eighty-eight athletes from 18 nations contest three gold medals — men's, women's and mixed doubles — before "Super Friday" on 28 August crowns the sport's inaugural Mediterranean champions. All matches are streamed live on Eurovision Sport to fans in 244 countries and territories.

Two Spanish Pairs Set the Men's Standard

Top seeds Pol Hernández and Guillermo Collado, FIP-ranked 35th and 37th in the world respectively, open their campaign in the morning session against the winner of the qualifying duel between Egypt's Hossam and Wakim and Athletica Vaticana's Lucarelli and Peloni. The second Spanish pair — José Diestro and David Gala — face either Greece's Balafas and Sioulis or Tunisia's Elloumi and Helali, depending on the qualifier outcome. Italy fields two seeded men's pairs in the draw: Flavio Abbate and Álvaro Montiel enter as third seeds, while Federico Cassetta and Iacovino come in sixth. Portugal's Nuno Deus and Miguel Deus are seeded fourth, rounding out the top four and giving the Iberian nations a firm hold on the bracket's upper rungs. With no unseeded pair from outside Spain, Italy or Portugal expected to threaten the top four, the decisive men's confrontation is likely to arrive at the semi-finals stage on Thursday 27 August.

Araujo Tops the Women's Field as Portugal's Standard-Bearer

The headline figure in the women's draw is world number eight Sofia Araujo, who partners Ana Catarina Nogueira as the overall top seed — the highest FIP-ranked player competing anywhere in Taranto this week. Portugal's opening opponent is Turkey's Kocak and Polat. Spain's Lucía Sainz and Patty Llaguno, seeded second, begin against Montenegro's Matijević and Simonović, while third seeds Nuria Rodríguez and Jimena Velasco complete a dual Spanish presence in the women's half. Italy's Giorgia Marchetti and Carolina Orsi, the fourth seeds, are backed by Giulia Dal Pozzo and Carlotta Casali at seed five. The FIP singled out Dal Pozzo as "the season's major breakthrough player" ahead of these Games, and the Taranto courts represent her biggest multi-sport stage to date. At world number 31, Orsi is the highest-ranked Italian player across all draws in the tournament.

Format, Road to the Final and What Comes Next

Mixed doubles competition opens on Sunday 23 August. Quarter-finals are scheduled for Tuesday 25 and Wednesday 26 August, semi-finals for Thursday 27, and all three gold-medal matches on Friday 28: bronze bouts in the morning, followed by the mixed final, the women's final and — as the evening closer — the men's final. Scoring uses the Star Point system with best-of-three sets and a tiebreak in every set.

Padel's trajectory through major multi-sport events has accelerated sharply since the Krakow European Games in 2023. Appearances in Nagoya, Riyadh and at Pan American editions have followed; Taranto now brings the sport to the Mediterranean for the first time as a fully-fledged medal discipline. Of the 18 competing nations, several — including Kosovo and Tunisia — are making their debut on this level of international padel competition, broadening the sport's reach well beyond its traditional heartlands.
