Spanish padel is mourning one of its best-known coaches. Gustavo Oliva, the former player who founded Padel Academy Barcelona, died on Monday 19 October at the age of 58 after colorectal cancer. Tributes came quickly. The Spanish Padel Federation, the Catalan federation and Fernando Belasteguín, one of the sport's most decorated players, were among those paying their respects.

A player turned teacher

Oliva was ranked in the top 10 in Catalonia and the top 50 in Spain during his playing career, according to Padel Spain. His greater impact came on the coaching side. At Padel Academy Barcelona he worked with players competing at national and international level. That made him one of the leading figures in padel coaching in Catalonia, a region where the sport took hold early and grew fast.

He came from Terrassa, near Barcelona. A wake was held at the town's funeral home on 20 October, and a farewell ceremony took place on 21 October at the Cathedral of Sant Esperit, Spanish magazine ¡HOLA! reported. He is survived by his wife, Inma, and two daughters, aged 33 and 30.

A public farewell and a warning

Oliva was open about his illness to the end. On 7 October he posted a long farewell letter on Instagram. In it he wrote that his condition had progressed rapidly and that his time was running out, and he gave thanks for what he described as a complete and happy life. Padel Spain reported that the cancer had spread to his liver, spleen and lymph nodes.

He used the same letter to urge his followers to take health checks seriously. He wrote that earlier detection might have changed his outcome. In his last interview, given to Barcelona newspaper La Vanguardia from a palliative care unit, he said he was sad that he would not live to become a grandfather and that he had been saying goodbye to people day by day.

Tributes from padel and tennis

Fernando Belasteguín, the Spanish Padel Federation and the Catalan Padel Federation all published messages of condolence. Former world-class players Marta Marrero and Carolina Navarro and ex-tennis pro Fernando Verdasco also paid tribute.

One of the most personal messages came from former Roland Garros finalist Álex Corretja, a close friend. On Instagram he wrote: "Se ha ido un gran ser humano, un gran amigo y un gran profesional" ("A great human being, a great friend and a great professional has left us"). He added: "Te echaremos de menos, Gus" ("We will miss you, Gus").

Why his story matters beyond Spain

Oliva's career covers the whole history of the modern game in Spain. He belonged to the generation that played and taught padel in Catalonia long before the current boom. Today the sport fills arenas from Milan to Kuwait, and clubs are opening across Britain, Scandinavia and the United States. Much of the coaching knowledge behind that growth was developed in Spanish academies like his in Barcelona.

His final message reached well beyond the court. The main point of his letter was simple: get checked early. Colorectal cancer is one of the cancers where screening makes a major difference to outcomes. That warning was the last lesson Gustavo Oliva left his sport before he died in Barcelona on 19 October.
