Cheshire Claims Inaugural Men's 50+ UK Padel County Championship Title

Cheshire's Men's 50+ team has claimed their first UK Padel County Championship title, edging out Surrey in a closely contested final. The victory marks a significant milestone for padel development in the region and showcases the sport's growing appeal among mature players across England.

Historic First Title for Cheshire

The triumphant squad featured a blend of experience and local club talent. Craig Mellor, David Thomas, and Leo Padovani—all founders of Manchester Padel Club—combined with regular MPC players Nick Baglin (Captain), Christian Smyth, Steve Flanagan, and Seb Jackson to secure the championship. The team's preparation was thorough, with players training under the guidance of coaches Leo and David in the weeks leading up to the competition.

The narrow victory over Surrey demonstrated the competitive standard of the Men's 50+ category at county level. As padel continues to expand across the UK, age-group competitions like this have become crucial in building grassroots participation and retention among veteran players who bring decades of racquet sport experience to the court.

Padel's Growth in Northwest England

The success reflects the increasing investment in padel facilities and coaching infrastructure across the Northwest. Manchester Padel Club's involvement—with three founders in the winning team—highlights how club-based development programs are directly contributing to competitive success at county championships.

The Men's 50+ category has become one of the fastest-growing segments in padel, attracting players transitioning from tennis, squash, and other racquet sports. The physical demands of padel, combined with its lower court coverage requirements compared to tennis, make it particularly appealing for mature athletes seeking competitive play without excessive joint stress.

Building Momentum for UK Padel

County championships serve as essential pathways for identifying talent and fostering regional pride in padel. Cheshire's inaugural title win is expected to inspire increased participation in the county and strengthen the competitive pipeline feeding into higher-level UK Padel competitions.

With the Men's 50+ category establishing itself as a staple of UK Padel's grassroots calendar, victories like Cheshire's demonstrate that padel's appeal transcends age groups and continues to attract serious competitors at every level.
