When the women's final gets underway at 4pm CET this Sunday at Movistar Arena, Gemma Triay will have the chance to rewrite padel history. The Menorcan and her Argentine partner Delfi Brea need only one more title to equal the record of 58 major-circuit victories held by Alejandra Salazar — the very woman Madrid is honouring with a farewell ceremony later the same afternoon.

A record within reach

Triay currently sits at 57 titles accumulated across the Padel Pro Tour, World Padel Tour and Premier Padel circuits, one short of Salazar's benchmark of 58. The figure is all the more striking given the context: this is Triay's 14th final from 16 Premier Padel events this season, a consistency no rival has matched.

Standing in her way are world No. 2 Paula Josemaría and Bea González — and a daunting recent head-to-head. González and Josemaría have beaten Triay and Brea five consecutive times in 2026, winning in Miami, Giza, Brussels, Asunción and Buenos Aires. Triay's two wins this year came in Cancún and Málaga, and the Madrid surface offers a potential reset.

González and Josemaría arrived in today's final via one of the most dramatic moments of the entire season: they were 0-5 down in the deciding set against Claudia Fernández and Martina Calvo on Saturday before reeling off seven consecutive games to advance. Three match points for Fernández-Calvo at 5-3 went begging, and the London P1 champions turned near-elimination into a place in Sunday's showpiece.

Triay and Brea had the smoother path, dismissing Ari Sánchez and Andrea Ustero 6-2, 6-4 in the other semi. Triay told reporters: "¡Qué tensión! Menos mal que hemos terminado el partido" — a rare acknowledgement of nerves from a player who has barely left a final all year.

Salazar's send-off: between two finals

Between the women's and men's finals, Movistar Arena will host the official tribute ceremony for Alejandra Salazar, who announced the end of her professional career at the close of this season. Already eliminated in the quarterfinals — by Triay and Brea, 6-3, 6-3 — the madrileña had already received one extended standing ovation from her home crowd this week. Today the arena gives her a formal goodbye.

Salazar's record spans 62 official titles including seven World Championship victories and four seasons at world No. 1 with three different partners. Whether or not Triay pulls level today, the poetic weight of the moment — the most decorated active player chasing the retiring legend's benchmark, in that legend's home city — gives this Madrid P1 a storyline that goes beyond any single scoreline.

Men's final: Nieto–Yanguas go back-to-back

The men's final, scheduled for no earlier than 5:45pm CET, sets up Coki Nieto and Mike Yanguas against Fede Chingotto and Ale Galán. Nieto and Yanguas are appearing in their second consecutive Premier Padel / FIP final in as many weeks: they won the FIP Gold in Belgrade last Sunday, beating Stupaczuk and Sanz in that debut pairing's first major event. In Madrid's semifinal they overcame Gonzalo Alfonso and Tino Libaak 6-4, 7-6.

Chingotto and Galán — seeds 2 and 5 respectively — beat Íñigo Jofre and Jairo Bautista 6-3, 6-4 in the other semi. For Chingotto and Galán, today is their seventh title opportunity of the 2026 season. With the world No. 1 ranking at stake in the men's draw, neither pair will concede anything cheaply.

Both finals will be broadcast live on Canal+ in Spain. Internationally, the opening rounds are available on Premier Padel's YouTube channel. The Paris Major at Roland-Garros opens its qualifying draw tomorrow, September 7.
