No upsets, no dropped sets and no surprises: the men's quarter-finals of the Milano Premier Padel P1 at the Allianz Cloud on Friday, 16 October, sent all four top seeds into the last four. That gives Saturday a heavyweight line-up. World number ones Agustín Tapia and Arturo Coello meet Franco Stupaczuk and Jon Sanz, and defending champions Alejandro Galán and Federico Chingotto take on Juan Lebrón and Leandro Augsburger.
Tapia and Coello need under an hour
The top seeds opened the day in their usual style. Tapia and Coello beat Fran Guerrero and Javi Leal 6-2, 6-2 in 59 minutes and never looked like losing control. The pair arrive in Milan on a run of three straight titles, after winning in Paris, Rotterdam and Düsseldorf.
Their semi-final opponents will feel familiar. Stupaczuk and Sanz beat the Argentine pairing of Momo González and Lucas Campagnolo 6-3, 6-4 in just over an hour. This is the third tournament in a row in which the two pairs have met. Last week in Düsseldorf, Tapia and Coello won that final 6-2, 7-5. Stupaczuk and Sanz are chasing a third consecutive final and, more importantly, a first breakthrough against the number ones in this run.
Galán and Chingotto survive a tie-break
The defending champions had the hardest quarter-final of the top four. Galán and Chingotto took the first set 6-3 against Gonzalo Alfonso and Tino Libaak, but the Argentines pushed the second set to a tie-break. The number two seeds won it 7-4 to close out a 6-3, 7-6 victory.
Milan is a special venue for Galán. He has won three titles in four editions of the event, and this year he is trying to retain the crown alongside Chingotto. That bid now runs into a familiar opponent.
Lebrón ends the Garrido-De Pascual run
Lebrón and Augsburger closed the round by beating Javi Garrido and Juani De Pascual 7-6, 6-3. Garrido and De Pascual had been one of the stories of the week after knocking out Francisco Navarro and Martín Di Nenno in the last 16. They pushed the third seeds hard in the first set, but Lebrón and Augsburger dominated the tie-break 7-1 and controlled the second set.
The win sets up another Lebrón-Galán semi-final. The rivalry between the two Spaniards, once partners, remains one of the most watched match-ups on the tour. In Milan it also pits Chingotto's defence and consistency against Augsburger's power. It is a clash of styles with a place in Sunday's final at stake.
Semi-final schedule
For the second tournament running, the semi-final line-up mirrors Düsseldorf, with the four strongest teams of the season all still alive. Play at the Allianz Cloud starts on Saturday, 17 October, at 14:00 Spanish time, with the women's and men's semi-finals sharing the centre court. The matches are shown on Premier Padel's official platforms.
The two semi-finals in full:
Tapia / Coello vs Stupaczuk / Sanz: a third straight meeting, with the number ones going for a fourth consecutive title.
Galán / Chingotto vs Lebrón / Augsburger: the defending champions against the third seeds, with Galán chasing a fourth Milan crown.
If the seeds hold again, Sunday's final would be the season's two leading pairs, Tapia and Coello against Galán and Chingotto. Stupaczuk, Sanz, Lebrón and Augsburger all have the form to stop that happening.
